31 days of unplugged play: bathing baby dolls

[really_simple_share]

The following post is by editor Kara Fleck.

My two littlest girls had quite a grumpy morning one day this past summer.  The usual games, songs, and stories weren’t soothing or cheering them up.  So, we headed outdoors, normally the perfect cure for a bad mood, but even that didn’t seem to brighten up my two little grouches.

Until I added some water into the mix.

So, today’s unplugged play idea is an oldie but a goodie from the archives:  bathing baby dolls.

Water play: a baby doll bath

I set up a simple scene with plastic bowls, sponges, and small cups  and a few kitchen towels.  Then I instructed the girls to wash their baby dolls (making sure the dolls I gave them for this job were all plastic and could tolerate water).

It was simple, but perfect for chasing away a grumpy day, and we’ve played wash the babies (and rocks, cars, dishes, popsicle sticks, etc.) quite a few times since.  If the weather is not cooperating for outside dolly bathing, why not in your bathtub indoors?

Oh, Dear!

Have you noticed that I’m a bit behind on my 31 Days of Unplugged Play series?  Real life keeps getting in the way of blogging, but that certainly isn’t something I’m complaining about!

I promise to keep going until I have 31 days of unplugged play ideas shared with you if you guys don’t mind having to be just a little bit patient with me (and don’t mind if the series runs a few days into early November).

  1. Water is often our go to option when we’re having a grumpy day. A bath with colored ice cubes. A bowl of water with kitchen utensils. The sprinkler out in the yard. Pretending to “shave” with a bowl full of water and a dollop of shaving cream. Water always seems to make everything better.

  2. Water play is so fun. We don’t have a water table but we “make” one! It is amazing how long water will entertain. I had never thought about giving the dolls a bath. My daughter doesn’t have an all plastic doll, so maybe I will have to get one for her next birthday!

  3. This sounds like fun! We often do bubble play first with lots of bubble wands and containers. Then we follow up with water play with cups, funnels, spray bottles, and sieves. Pouring water and spraying water makes for some relaxing time and cleans up the bubbles.

  4. My Mom always says that was the magic trick for her in raising three children. If we were too grumpy and cranky, she just put us all in the bathtub to play.

  5. I love this idea!!! I must find some baby dolls at a garage sale or thrift store and try this with the co-op preschoolers that I will be helping with in the fall!
    Thanks!
