Permission to Be Kind to Yourself Today

[really_simple_share]

The following is by editor Kara Fleck.

Happy Valentine’s Day!  I know that you have probably spent the time leading up to this day coming up with ways to show your loved ones how much you care about them and planning some simple family celebrations for them.

I want to encourage you to do something else today, as well:  be kind to yourselves.

You deserve it.

Thank You

While I strive to make life simple and parenting uncomplicated, I will never say that it is easy.  I’m here, in the trenches with you, and I know some of the sacrifices you make and difficult things that you do on a daily basis.  And, I want to say thank you for that.

Thank you for being willing to say no to the choices and things that aren’t right for your family, even if that means you’re doing something differently from everyone else around you.  Thank you for being willing to say yes to the things that you know will bless your families.  And for being flexible in responding to the seasons of life and making changes when the time is right or something isn’t working.

Thank you for the late nights, early mornings, and long days. Thank you for cleaning up messes of the kind you could have never imagined before parenthood. Thank you for the hundreds of tasks that you do that perhaps no one notices, but that make all the difference in the lives of your family.

Thank you for loving your kids.  Thank you for choosing to spend time with them, for treasuring them, and striving to create peaceful homes and childhoods for them.

Thank you for realizing that no one is perfect.  And for loving your kids and yourself anyway.

Be Kind to Yourself

For all of those things, and more, today I give you permission to be kind to yourself.  Not that you actually need my permission, but for today moms and dads, I’m telling you that it is okay to …

  • … sip your tea or your coffee a little slower, savoring it
  • … linger fifteen minutes longer over your newspaper or book
  • … put your feet up in the middle of the day
  • … set your To Do list aside and focus on what is Done
  • … look at your amazing kids and give yourself some of the credit
  • … take a nap when everyone else does, and ignore the dishes
  • … play your favorite song and sing along.  And then do it again.
  • … call your best friend and don’t fold laundry during the call
  • … forget all about the bad day you may have had yesterday and start over today

Today, I hope that you will cut yourself a little bit of slack, give yourself some pampering, and be kind to yourself.  And, I would gently encourage you to find a small way to do that for yourself every day.

Because, when you think about it, as mundane as some of the tasks of parenting are, it really is pretty amazing and wonderful what you’re doing.  And I’m so proud to be here in the trenches with you!

Happy Valentine’s Day, my friends!
