Connecting with Nature Challenge #3: Backyard Campout!

[really_simple_share]

Our third challenge in the Connecting with Nature is to participate in the Great American Backyard Campout on this Saturday, June 27th.

Your family may choose an elaborate set-up and indulge in a night spent entirely outdoors, or perhaps a more simple approach for a few evening hours is more your speed.  Whatever it looks like for your family, this is a fun way to unite with families across the United States (and perhaps even across the globe!) as we celebrate the tradition of the campout.

Don’t forget to head over to Simple Mom for this week’s discussion of Last Child in the Woods – chapters 6-8!

  1. We’re “camping” on a houseboat in Arkansas this weekend… does that count? :) Love what you’re doing with this site, Megan! Keep up the good work.

  2. We will be participating! My daughter has been asking to camp in the backyard since I told her about how my friends and I used to do it when we were kids. Although we camp all the time, this will be our first backyard campout. She wants to have a fire and to bring the baby pool and put it outside the tent so we can “camp by the water”.

It’ll be fun. I hope lots of folks do it.

  3. Hi Megan,
We are totally camping out in the backyard this weekend! :) My husband and I love camping but we now have 2 very young children (23 months and 7 months) so it could be a little interesting. We thought we would have a test run this weekend and see how we make out. Then we may head out to an actual camp site. Have a very fun weekend! :)

  4. We are going to my sisters new house in Columbus OH, they have no furniture moved in yet so we are going to camp out in the livingroom. Does that count?

  5. We are participating too. We wanted to head out last weekend and it never panned out, so when I let the kids know about Great American Backyard Campout Night they got so excited. We have been going over our checklist, although it will be easy to go back in to get something we have forgotten since we’ll be right out back!

  7. I just found this post, but we actually did campout in our friends’ backyard last night, along with about 50 other friends (30 of them were the children!). This is the 5th year of a tradition among our friends. Everyone brings a different part of the meals (dinner and breakfast). Our friends who host have a large yard, a campfire pit in the corner of their yard, and neighbors who have horses, pigs, and they have chickens– the kids love it and the parents do too! I don’t think they knew about the official backyard campout challenge– just happened to land on that date this summer. This has been a really fun tradition that we look forward to every year!
