We didn't have a field guide with us, but we took pictures of flowers we thought were pretty and then tried to identify them online. Not only was it a fun project, but we learned some interesting tidbits about local wildflowers. It's so fun to learn the name of something beautiful! Here's the post I did on our nature walk: http://tinyurl.com/lqbxjt It's blossomed into just being curious about the things we see around us every day. There's a certain kind of bird that we see here that we don't recall seeing when we lived in Tennessee. My 7-year-old learned how to use a field guide to birds while visiting her grandfather, and know we know it's a red-winged blackbird.
