Today is my birthday.  I”m celebrating 39 trips around the sun and I”m thankful for every single one, even the ones that left me with a few more wrinkles and white hair.

“It takes a long time to grow young.” – Pablo Picasso

Since today is my birthday, I wanted to do something that makes me very happy:  giving gifts.

I can”t think of a nicer way to celebrate than to give away some of my favorite things to a Simple Kids reader!

The giveaway

This giveaway is for some of my favorite things. Included are:

Artterro art journal

We are pretty big fans of Artterro at our house.  The company”s award winning (and eco-friendly!) arts and crafts kits are so much fun.  If you have an older child, or perhaps your own inner child, who loves to create these kits are perfect.  My eleven year old and I love their journal kits the best. Artterro very kindly sent us one art journal kit to giveaway and they provided a discount code for Simple Kids readers, too:  use the code FAVEART20 for 20% off any order through January 2, 2013Thanks, Artterro!

Heaven on Earth

There are a few books on my bookshelf that I read and re-read, marking up the pages, tagging things with post-it tabs, returning to their advice and ideas again and again.  Heaven on Earth: A Handbook for Parents of Young Children by Sharifa Oppenheimer is one of those books.  I”ve been loving and referring to our copy since 2009, this book is full of advice on everything from daily rhythm and routines to chores to play.  I know you”ll love it, too!

Naturally Fun Parties for Kids

provided lots of inspirations for crafts, decorations, and recipes for our family”s celebrations this past year.  I”m already marking some ideas for next year”s birthdays and get-togethers.  I think you”ll be inspired by the ideas in this book, too.  You can read my full review here.

Spot It!

is one of our favorite family games.  Small enough to tuck away into the diaper bag, easy enough for our four year old to play with a little help, and fun for kids of all ages.  Spot It! is a matching game, the object being to be the fastest person to call out the match between two cards.  There are 55 cards in each deck, each card is decorated with 8 symbols, and there are more than 50 symbols in all.  You can read my review of Spot It! here.

Simplicity Parenting

Simplicity Parenting: Using the Extraordinary Power of Less to Raiser Calmer, Happier and More Secure Kids by Kim John Payne has probably had a bigger influence on my parenting over the past few years than just about any other parenting book I”ve read.  And I read a lot of parenting books.   This is another title that I turn to time and time again and I think every parent should have a copy on their bookshelf.

One Simple Kids reader will win all of these things, my birthday gift to you!

  1. I loaded up my car and headed to an island beach for a week with my 3 kiddos. Perfect birthday present to me. : )

  2. Picnic dinner at our favorite park!

  3. I celebrated my last birthday by having my husbands family over. When I moved here with my husband, it totally boggled my mind that his family never got together and when they did all we heard was arguing. So now every birthday we have we invite the family over with the rule that they have to get along and it has strengthened family bonds a lot more than we thought possible!

  4. Well, first HAppy Birthday! i hope it is a beautiful day and magical year! This birthday I had just started a new job (which I just quit it was so awful) so I don’t really recall doing anything special…maybe got dinner from a favorite place?

  5. My last birthday was spent going to the potluck we go to every Tuesday. My husband and kids had gone earlier in the day and dropped off decorations and loads of ice cream (my personal favorite!) so I was surprised when I walked through the door. :-)

  6. Happy birthday! :). I celebrated with a VERY delicious chantilly berry cake from Whole Foods and some special ice cream from my home state of Ohio ! Celebrated the next day too by having it for breakfast ;)

  7. Took my time getting up and dressed for the day, received homemade gifts from my young children, leisurely enjoyed a cup of coffe and a dinner courtesy of my husband.

  8. On my last birthday we packed up the family and went to a little artsy community about and hour away. We enjoyed the windy roads and beautiful scenery on the way down, stopping whenever the mood struck us. We wandered through stores when we got to our destination, stopping for snacks and breaks as necessary. Then off to a family-owned and operated pizza house/micro brewery for a late lunch. We topped off the day with a visit to a glass-blowing studio where we got to watch local artisans blow amazing pieces if functional art. All in all, a great day!

  9. Michele Villano says:

My kids, husband and I went to MY favorite restaurant :o)

  10. I had a homemade dinner (made by my sister and my kids) alongside my immediate family, my parents, my brothers and sisters. No fancy night out just some good family time and a great meal.

  11. Happy Birthday! My birthday day is new year’s day. Every year we head to a local restaurant and have an “open house” visiting with friends and family throughout the afternoon. It is a great way to celebrate.

  12. I spent my birthday on the beach in Hawaii with my handsome husband and beautiful 2 year old little girl! Best birthday ever :)

  13. Stephanie B says:

My husband gave me the day off and $200 to spend :)

  14. Celebrated 38 years by attending a kite festival with my family.
We ate my birthday cake out of a 9×13 pan since we forgot to pack plates…very fun memories!

  15. My birthday was Saturday after Thansgiving, so lots of family time and some time to myself to go shopping. A family dinner with homemade cards from the kids and cake, chocolate of course!

  16. It was my husband’s drill weekend with the National Guard in Albuquerque (3 hrs away) so we packed up the kids and all went, the kids and I spent all day at the zoo.

  17. I worked until 7:30 pm on my last birthday and even though my husband had just had his last chemo treatment him and my 6 yr old daughter managed to make me a cheesecake. We had a very quiet celebration all cuddled up on the couch munching on the cheesecake.

  18. I took the day off of work and casually shopped, had lunch, and got a manicure. Then I met up with my husband and kids that evening for a lovely birthday dinner!

  19. Left my 5mo and 3yo alone with DH and got a much-needed haircut! Happy birthday to you!!

  20. I celebrated my 40th birthday in October by packing seed packets to send to Africa with Global Aid Network. My mom was able to be with us, and so my husband, boys, my mom, and I had a blast doing it together!

  22. I went to vegas with my husband!
    Leah´s latest post: Another Milestone

  23. My last birthday was a milestone–40. We spent that weekend at Great Wolf Lodge, which is a kids water park and resort. I’ve had better birthdays…

  24. Happy Birthday to you! I turned thirty this year and I celebrated by going to Yosemite with my family. It was wonderful. My favorite place, with my favorite people.

  25. DH and I collected acorns and made the acorn napkin rings I’d been wanting for a long time but was too overwhelmed to make myself. It was a fun project for us to do together, and a wonderful gift for me.

  26. With the family, pool day out, got treated to a delicious massage, and the girls (2 and 4) kept their secret of a nice cake after dinner. Simple and fun!

  27. I celebrated my last birthday by taking my kids shopping with a little spending money my father gave me and then enjoying a nice dinner with my family.

  28. Heather Jensen says:

My last birthday was black friday this year. I started it out shopping and ended it with what was suppose to be a surprise party but my husband was talking outside in the morning to loud. Non the less it was the first party for me in over ten years. I throw a lot of parties but this one was special!

  29. Hi Kara, Thank you for all your warmth and inspiration! We celebrate you! My last birthday I turned 41, and I was feeling pretty exhausted and worn out. A very generous friend gave me a $50 gift certificate to go recharge myself, so I went to a spa and had a massage. It was wonderful! Then I came home and gave the kids and my husband little facials and foot massages. It was cute, we never did that before. We put essential oil in some warm water, and my four year old daughter really got a good giggle session in with the cucumbers on her eyes. It got me thinking that we should incorporate these special times every day, not just on “special” days. Happy Birthday!

  30. My last birthday, I celebrated at a tiny, local tapas bar.

  31. Julia Janzen says:

Happy Birthday! Hope you have a blessed day and a joyful year. My last birthday was spent simply with my husband and little ones enjoying a non hurried day and lots of hugs. :)

  35. My family took me to a fun restaurant!

  36. We (my husband, children and I with the dog) took a walk on a new trail at one of our favorite state parks. It was wonderful. I’d rather have a day like that than all the cake and gifts in the world.

  37. Theresa Sundstrom says:

Happy Birthday! I spent time with family at home my last birthday with my husband inbetween jobs. Thanks for a chance to win! :)

  38. We spent my last birthday (the big 3-0) in Disneyland — a happy birthday in the “happiest place on earth”.

    Happy birthday to you!

    Cindi

  41. Happy birthday!
I take my birthday off from work every year..its a way to make sure i take time for ME and do what “I” want instead of what my family wants/needs…the first few years i felt selfish doing this but now I look FORWARD to that once a year! I hope you are able to also do what you want on your birthday..
