Today is my birthday.  I”m celebrating 39 trips around the sun and I”m thankful for every single one, even the ones that left me with a few more wrinkles and white hair.

“It takes a long time to grow young.” – Pablo Picasso

Since today is my birthday, I wanted to do something that makes me very happy:  giving gifts.

I can”t think of a nicer way to celebrate than to give away some of my favorite things to a Simple Kids reader!

The giveaway

This giveaway is for some of my favorite things. Included are:

Artterro art journal

We are pretty big fans of Artterro at our house.  The company”s award winning (and eco-friendly!) arts and crafts kits are so much fun.  If you have an older child, or perhaps your own inner child, who loves to create these kits are perfect.  My eleven year old and I love their journal kits the best. Artterro very kindly sent us one art journal kit to giveaway and they provided a discount code for Simple Kids readers, too:  use the code FAVEART20 for 20% off any order through January 2, 2013Thanks, Artterro!

Heaven on Earth

There are a few books on my bookshelf that I read and re-read, marking up the pages, tagging things with post-it tabs, returning to their advice and ideas again and again.  Heaven on Earth: A Handbook for Parents of Young Children by Sharifa Oppenheimer is one of those books.  I”ve been loving and referring to our copy since 2009, this book is full of advice on everything from daily rhythm and routines to chores to play.  I know you”ll love it, too!

Naturally Fun Parties for Kids

provided lots of inspirations for crafts, decorations, and recipes for our family”s celebrations this past year.  I”m already marking some ideas for next year”s birthdays and get-togethers.  I think you”ll be inspired by the ideas in this book, too.  You can read my full review here.

Spot It!

is one of our favorite family games.  Small enough to tuck away into the diaper bag, easy enough for our four year old to play with a little help, and fun for kids of all ages.  Spot It! is a matching game, the object being to be the fastest person to call out the match between two cards.  There are 55 cards in each deck, each card is decorated with 8 symbols, and there are more than 50 symbols in all.  You can read my review of Spot It! here.

Simplicity Parenting

Simplicity Parenting: Using the Extraordinary Power of Less to Raiser Calmer, Happier and More Secure Kids by Kim John Payne has probably had a bigger influence on my parenting over the past few years than just about any other parenting book I”ve read.  And I read a lot of parenting books.   This is another title that I turn to time and time again and I think every parent should have a copy on their bookshelf.

One Simple Kids reader will win all of these things, my birthday gift to you!

Just some low key family time. Best way to spend it!

  2. Happy Birthday! Thanks for a really great giveaway! I spent my last birthday at home, one of the biggest disadvantages of leaving in another country than the rest of your family… Hopefully this year we have family here, so we can have a long awaited night out :)

  3. Britney Maples says:

Last year was my 30th! And my husband and little ones threw me a little birthday party at home with homemade cards and decorations. :)

  4. Happy Birthday! My birthday was back in June. This may not sound like much, but in my curent stage, this was heaven. My husband feed my 1.5yr old twins so I could sleep in 1hour longer. I felt refreshed and enjoyed my usual day so much more. Then he washed the dishes after dinner and we open a few gifts. the days of packed full wonderful things on birthdays will come back, but for now the simple gift of sleep and my family are what I cherished.

  5. This past birthday (#34), I celebrated over a long weekend at my parents house with my husband, my two young daughters and my siblings. We made food, lounged around, played music and sat in the sun. It was fantastic! My husband, sister and her significant other even snuck away for a little boat ride to take an “end of summer” swim on my actual birthday. It’s the little things and experiences I hold with me all yearlong!

  6. My Birthday is January 1st, so I’m usually pretty wiped out! My favorite Holiday/Birthday tradition … all of my children’s Birthdays fall in December and mine January 1st, so we like to go out to a fancy dinner and share and big dessert to celebrate all our Birthdays!

  7. Went out for supper with husband and kids.

  8. Happy birthday! I spent my last birthday (in May) with my husband and 11 month old, packing up our apartment to move! I think I also made a nice dinner and rhubarb crisp (one of my favourite desserts). :)

  9. Fun giveaway! I spent my last birthday working but the weekend after I spent a lot of time with my family and some nice time snuggled up with tea and a good book. It was perfect.

  10. I spent my birthday at the beach and had dinner at the restaurant by the beach which is renowned for its food. All our meals were delicious!

  11. I spent my birthday paying it to forward doing one random act of kindness (RAOK) per year of my wonderful life. It was a treasure to have my kids participate in all the small, simple good deeds. I am already excited to celebrate my next one, and have been keeping a list of fun tings we plan to do!

  12. I made a cake for myself and let my boys blow out my candles! low-key and surrounded by family

  13. Your favorite things sound so great they may become some of my favorite things too. I have read Simplicity Parenting and it is great. Heaven on Earth sounds like such a peaceful, insightful read.

  14. Hmmm…I really don’t remember. That is sad, but I’m guessing it wasn’t too exciting b/c we were in the middle of a move! :)

  15. My husband made me cheesecake from scratch! He didn’t think it was fair that everyone else got their homemade cakes, but I didn’t. It was really good and he’s make it for several other occassions since!

  22. Drea Taylor says:

We just celebrated my daughter’s first birthday with a party inviting most of our friends. We asked for them to not bring gifts so there was no pressure but to enjoy eachother’s company and eat some Healthy Chocolate Cake. Both sets of grandparents came in from opposite ends of the country, so very special times.

  23. I spent my last birthday with my family. There is never a huge celebration because it is during my husbands busy season at work. But my mom always has us over for dinner which is a nice break during such a stressful hectic time for our family!

  24. My husband and I got a baby sitter and spent the evening with some friends in Boston. Best part? The dessert restaurant, Finale.

  25. Happy Birthday!
My 43rd birthday in June was unfortunately a sad one for me as my mother had passed away 3 weeks earlier.
For my children’s sake we did have a small party and went out to dinner to celebrate.

  26. Trisha Lawrie says:

My birthday fell three days before my due date with my third baby. People in my life were hoping I would have the baby on my birthday, but I didn’t. Number one, that’s not what i wanted to be doing on my birthday, and number two, everyone needs their own special day. I spent my day reveling in my last year with only two children, being thankful for my third, and getting served breakfast in bed!

  27. My family and a couple of friends celebrated my birthday by taking me out to eat.

  28. Sandra Amorim says:

My last birthday was spent nursing two sick kiddos! I still got birthday cake and flowers though! Happy birthday!

  32. My last birthday was pretty low key but spent just how I’d want to, with my family.

  33. I got in a huge fight with a very close friend whose birthday is the day before. I made up on my birthday by purchasing an amazing peanut butter chocolate mini cake for both of us and we went out for all you can eat crab legs!

  38. I spent my birthday weekend in Philadelphia, introducing my little ones to my favorite haunts and watching them discover the joys of staying in a hotel–it was beyond wonderful to see their excitement over the smallest things like watching city traffic from 8 floors up simply because it was all for the first time. Delicious…….

  39. I celebrated by having dinner with my family, my parents, and my grandma.

  40. I spent my last birthday with extended family at my twin sister’s baby shower, then came home to find some great little gifts from my husband (Lindt chocolate and Lush soaps).

  43. I celebrated it with my family at home. I love those days.

  44. I celebrated the BIG 4-0 with a girls’ trip — mom, sister-in-law and sister. We celebrated by eating, shopping and seeing a Cirque show! Isn’t 40 the new 30?

  45. I took my kids to the pool and made myself some delicious homemade ice cream. My husband was out of town so it was me and my kiddos!

  46. I was fortunate to have been Hawaii over my birthday although we were traveling around that day. I did have a coconut cake though!

  47. Awww…it’s my daughter’s 5th birthday today and we celebrated with her cousins and auntie & uncle.

  48. My husband and kids joined me for a drive through to look at fall foliage and then my husband surprised me with a stop at an amazing destination cafe for brunch. It was lovely!

  49. My last birthday was my 30th, and it was pretty awesome. My best friend and cousin arrived at my house first thing in the morning with pastries, balloons, and a party hat for me to wear and then took me off to get a mani-pedi and lunch with some other friends, while my husband who was in on it watched the kiddo. Then when I came home, he had made me a cake. It was probably my best birthday ever.

  50. My daughter, son, and I have our birthdays within 2 weeks of each other. My birthday is the last in the row. So I chose a nice dinner out with a few friends and my husband to celebrate my special day. Have a great birthday!
