My first born just absorbs what your telling her. She is the child who loves workbooks and books. Can sit for hours working in a workbook. My youngest daughter is the one who learns when you don't think she is listening. She doesn't like to sit still. She will attend a 2 day a week (4 hours each day) co-op preschool in Sept. They learn through play. Which I think will suit her being she doesn't sit for long periods of time.

Megan,

Like you, my first born is little over 4 and he is into so many things. I agree that by doing things they learn much better without actually having get worksheet and other things done. My son loves cooking, composting and gardening with me, and I think those are also important tools that may or may not be taught in preschool or pre-k.

Thanks for sharing some great ideas. Early board games like Candyland are great for colors and counting on too. There is also so much you can do with dice and playing cards in terms of math- a great way to make learning basic facts fun!

@Candice, wow! What a creative way to instill some fundamentals about planning and organization. I would have never thought of doing something like that. Great idea - thanks for sharing!

One thing that I thought of adding to laundry list... no pun intended! I "try" to sort out outfits in advance, so a weeks worth clothes for each kid. They could make their own piles for the week. Monday: shirt, shorts, underwear, socks, Tuesday: etc. Doing it all at once saves the changing of minds, and everything is ready for the morning! candice
