Holiday Gift Craft-along (the early bird gets to put her feet up in December?)

Written by Kara Fleck, Simple Kids editor and Rockin’ Granola mama.

I interrupt your Summer fun to announce that December is coming. I know, I know.  It is the middle of July, temperatures are in the triple digits, and the farthest thing from your mind right now is preparing for the December holidays, let alone holiday gifts or crafting.

It was the farthest thing from my mind, too.  That is, until I glanced at the calendar and saw that next Wednesday is July 25, which means I have exactly five months until we celebrate Christmas.

Since I like to give each of my children at least one handmade thing every year and I also like to have all of my holiday crafting finished up before December 1st, that means I have approximately four months to select, create, and finish up a minimum of four handmade items.

Hmmmmm, a little daunting to look at it that way, eh?

A holiday kids gift craft-along

So, I thought about something I could do to motivate myself, and have a little bit of crafty fun with Simple Kids readers at the same time, and I thought about hosting a Holiday Gift Craft-along.  Are you game?

I’m not sure exactly how it will play out just yet, but I’m thinking about something along the lines of a monthly link-up where we could share what we’re working on, our progress, and any patterns, tutorials, or techniques that we’re finding helpful as we create holiday gifts for our kids.  Sound good?

Okay, then starting humming some holiday carols, cruising through Pinterest, and begin brainstorming some ideas.  I, for one, plan to spend some time this weekend with a tall glass of lemonade and my back issues of Living Crafts magazine.

A few posts from the archives to inspire you:

I will meet you back here in one week, on July 25th, and we’ll kick off our Holiday Craft-along and I’ll host a monthly link up on the 25th of every month where we can share our ideas and maybe even some progress for the real holiday go-getters.  (Hopefully I won’t be the only crazy one out there)

Now, back to your regularly scheduled popsicles, swimming, and bubble blowing Summer fun …

  5. I’m not too crafty with gifts, so I have no idea how long crafts normally take. Does it really take five months?! Wow that’s insane. Makes me appreciate the crafty gifts people give me more.

No wonder I was humming Christmas Carols yesterday. I will definitely be in.

  10. Wow, only five months away? I must admit, we’ve been singing Christmas Carols for the last two months… and I only managed to finish taking my Christmas decorations down at Easter…

I’m like Jaimie, I’ve been planning on getting ahead with Christmas since February – but still not there yet – so hopefully the craft along will be the perfect motivation – looking forward to it!

  11. Yes! I was just telling my hubby last night that I wanted to get started! This is great!

  12. Slap my name on this!!

  13. I’m in! Hopefully! :-) We are in the middle of a move, so things will get a little crazy in our lives…but I was looking at Christmas stockings to make last night. :-)

  14. Loretta S. says:

I’m in. See ya in a month!

  15. Every year I think, I’ll get started early as soon as school starts. But then it’s my daughter’s birthday, then Halloween, then my son’s birthday, then all of a sudden it’s the middle of November and I haven’t gotten anywhere on the handmade things I had in mind. So maybe I will start in the summer, and be DONE before Halloween. Hmm…

Wow… we are totally on the same page. And most of my friends think I’m crazy! But I already have my knitting list (which is way too long) almost ready and other ideas are brewing. Look forward to seeing what everyone else is making!
