Are you ready to read this Summer?  Simple Kids is joining in with PBS Kids Raising Readers and their Summer Reading Community Challenge. My family hosted our kick off party over the weekend and folks around here, big and little, are ready to go!  Won’t you join us?

Are You Ready for a Summer Reading Challenge?

PBS Kids has developed a FREE six weeks challenge for you and your kids.  Sign up at the website here, and starting June 6th, you and your kids will receive:

  • A daily email with fun activities to build reading skills
  • Tricks and advice from your Challenge coach
  • Great book suggestions for kids of all ages
  • Tips from other parents taking the challenge
  • A chance to win daily prizes

My kids and I will be participating.  Every Thursday here on the Simple Kids blog we’ll share our Summer reading adventures with all of you.

iVillage is offering a Summer Reading Community Challenge message forum, too so you can meet other parents taking the challenge with their kids and share ideas, resources, and book suggestions.  The PBS Kids Raise a Reader this Summer page is another great resource.

Don’t have a group to participate with?  Don’t let that stop you!  Create your own Summer reading club for just you and your kids. Who knows?  It could become a Summer tradition.

The kids and I have a stack of library cards, our record sheet for keeping track of our books, and some homemade bookmarks.  Ready, set, read!

Are you going to be participating in a Summer reading program? What have you and your kids been reading lately?

  1. We’re heading to the library today to sign up for their summer reading program. Thanks for the tip about this online challenge. Maybe we’ll start after we finish the book challenge we began last month!

We are doing one at the library, Half-Price Books, the grocery store (HEB), and Barnes and Noble. I think that’s enough for me! That PBS one sounds fun though . . .

  3. We also participate in the Summer Reading Club at our library. The kids love it. I will have to check this one out too.
