Naturally Fun Parties for Kids: a review and a giveaway!

The following post is by editor Kara Fleck.

We are entering the time of year known at the Fleck house as birthday party season.  Over the next few months we”ll celebrate four birthdays in our family, as well as celebrating two holidays and a family reunion.

Normally this means I”m facing a bit of a conundrum:  how to create wonderful, fun parties for my children without giving into the consumerism, highly processed, commercial party element that seems so prevalent in kids” parties these days? If those parties could be kind to the planet and kind to my budget, even better.

In other words, the book I”m sharing with you today landed on my desk for review at just the right time!

This giveaway is now closed.

Naturally Fun Parties for Kids

Naturally Fun Parties for Kids was written by Anni Daulter with Heather Fontenot.

Anni Daulter, the author,  is a professional cook and an advocate for sustainable living.  Her previous books include Ice Pop Joy, The Organic Family Cookbook,  and Organically Raised: Conscious Cooking for Babies and Toddlers.  She is also the co-founder of Bamboo magazine for whole family living.

Heather Fontenot is one of the editors of and writes a beautiful blog at Shivaya Naturals.

From the first glance at the cover I knew that this was a different kind of party book – not a plastic cake topper or artificial color in sight.  The softcover book has 128 pages with 12 seasonal party ideas for kids ages 5 to 12.  From creating the invitations to instructions for handmade decorations to games and kid-friendly recipes to serve your party guests, this book gently guides you through your party planning with over 200 full color photos and clearly written instructions.

The authors have even thoughtfully included timelines for party planning, so that you aren”t doing in all in a last minute rush (not that I”d ever do that.  ahem.) but can get started about a month to two weeks before your party.

The book includes earth-friendly, budget-friendly, yet fun seasonal themes, such as:

  • an egg dyeing Spring garden party
  • a pancake pajama party
  • forest faerie dress-up party
  • strawberry-picking and jam-making party
  • upcycle art party
  • knights and dragons quest party
  • and more!

It says a lot to me that my children, ranging in age from 3 to 10, also seemed naturally drawn to the book from the moment it arrived.  Each of them has spent some time skimming the pages and commenting on different elements and images that they would like, pretending to plan their own parties.

Myself?  I have marked several ideas with post-it notes and feel better prepared for the upcoming birthday season than I have a in a while.  More than that, I also feel inspired to throw some of these kid-friendly parties just because sometimes you don”t need a reason to celebrate and spend time with family and friends.

There are a lot of happy memories waiting within the pages of Naturally Fun Parties for Kids. My children and I can”t wait to get started celebrating!

  1. Sounds like a great resource! Fun!

  2. i was just online looking for birthday party ideas for my son. great idea for a book!

  3. It is always wonderful when a resource like this is available. I have many issues with kids parties such as the abundance of sweet, processed foods available and then the giving of the lolly bags, to the child which you then have to wrestle off them as they have already filled themselves on said sweet and processed foods at the party! Thank you for providing chance to win, but if not, thank you for reviewing the book.

    Regards, Faye

  4. I have spent way too much time looking at pretty party pictures that provide no ideas about how to actually make the party fun. This looks like a great book!

  22. Great idea! So many movie/toy/TV related themes out there…

  23. This book, I’m sure, would go a long way to backing me up when it comes to my (frequent) rantings to three young boisterous boys about the environmental woes of toys that use batteries, are made from plastic and break at the slightest abuse. I really hope I win this …. especially since my youngest’s birthday is just around the corner!

  31. We discovered that my sons are allergic to artificial food colorings, flavorings, and preservatives. Sigh…. They are all good with it until going by the fantastic bright birthday cakes at the bakery. I am always looking for ideas on making natural BETTER and MORE fun.

This book sounds like a perfect match for my family. I’ve done lots of creative things with simple cardboard and paint for my son, but I’m feeling more challenged than usual this year, as his ideas are veering more toward consumerist themes than I would like. Plus, my daughter will turn 5 this year. It will be her first official birthday with friends and the whole thing. I’ll bet this book would really help her formulate her choices, and help me, too! Thanks for the chance!

  41. i would LOVE this book, just the push i need to make my parties more simple/environmentally friendly! thank you!

  46. What a great idea for a book. My daughters birthday is in December but we try to use the nearby woods for her parties. We have done a nature scavenger hunt and a candy cane hunt. It was wonderful to see the woods decorated in candy canes!
