Parenting Resources: My Favorite Podcasts

[really_simple_share]

The following post is by Simple Kids editor Kara Fleck.

This week, I’m starting a new series showcasing some of my favorite parenting resources.  On Mondays for the rest of September I’m going to share with you some resources I’ve come to rely on and love.  To get things started, today I am sharing my favorite podcasts.

Why Podcasts?

I enjoy podcasts because I can listen while my hands are free to do something else. As any parent can tell you, there is always something that needs doing.

I love that I can listen to a podcast and feed my brain while I’m doing the  more mundane tasks like washing dishes, cleaning the house, folding laundry.  Knitting while listening to podcasts or audio books is also one of my favorite ways to relax.

You might not know that you don’t have to have an iPod or other mp3 player to listen to podcasts.  Many podcasters have the shows embedded into their webpages so you can listen directly at their website.

You can also download podcasts  to your computer and listen via iTunes or another media player.

My Favorite Parenting Podcasts

Mighty Mommy

One of the first parenting podcasts I discovered, Mighty Mommy is part of the Quick and Dirty Tips network.  Cherylyn Feierbend is the host of this series.  These podcasts keep their promise and are indeed quick – less than five minutes each.  I appreciate that they get straight to the point.  Perfect for a busy parent!

Though they aren’t specific to parenting, I also love Grammar Girl and The Math Dude from this network.

Life … Your Way

I’ve been listening to and greatly enjoying this series by Mandi Ehman of the amazing Life … Your Way network of blogs.   These podcasts are just a portion of the many wonderful and useful offerings Mandi and her contributors have for you at Life … Your Way.

Mandi brings in experts on a variety of topics from healthy eating to organizing. These ten to fifteen minute long shows are presented in a laid-back, informal manner that feels like a chat between old friends swapping parenting and life tips. I look forward to future shows and topics and to more from the entire Life…Your Way network.

Raising Playful Tots

Melitsa Avila of Raising Playful Tots puts together a fabulous weekly podcast!  She includes interviews, reviews and reactions to articles from around the web, parenting tips, and advice.

This is a longer podcast than the other two I’ve mentioned, but well worth the time to listen.  This podcast is one I like to knit along to or listen to while taking a walk when I find myself with a half an hour or so to myself.

Melitsa keeps the notes for each show on her website, so you can browse the index for specific topics.  Simple Mom contributer Maya Bisineer of MemeTales was recently featured and this past week was the Back to School show.

Kid Pleasers

My kids love to listen to podcasts, too. Some of their favorites include:

  7. I love podcasts! It’s great hands-free mommy entertainment & I like that I can plug one in anytime I feel like it. My favorite mommy cast is the Manic Mommies. They have great interviews & it’s fun to just listen to someone else’s parenting stories.

  8. Mom Enough is another great podcast. A new, free show is posted every Monday with expert guests who address topics related to children’s heath, development and learning. Shows last around 30 minutes. Developmental psychologist Dr. Marti Erickson and her daughter, maternal-child health specialist Erin Erickson, co-hosts of Mom Enough, explore the many facets of motherhood in today’s world – from confronting the daily joys and struggles of helping kids grow up well, to balancing work and family, to considering the big questions of how society views and values mothers and mothering. Marti and Erin use research-based information and a few personal confessions as they and their guests discuss what it means to be “mom enough.”
