Unplugged Play: a morning at the park and my current favorite bag #FEEDUSA

ParkDay4

This has been the summer of walking for our family.  It is excellent exercise for all of us, especially for this mama who spent far too much time indoors over the long winter.  After months of being fairly sedentary, getting outside and walking nearly every day has been so nice for our whole family.

Plus, walking has given us a chance to better become local tourists and really get to know the ins and outs of this wonderful small town where we live.

After a string of rainy and then super steamy hot days, we were more than ready for some unplugged play at our local park, so yesterday morning we loaded up my new favorite bag (more on that in a bit) and grabbed the stroller for Amelia, who would love to walk all by herself but can”t quite cover the distances just yet.

Then, out the door we went!

I”ll tell you another cool side benefit of walking so often:  we have some fun conversations.  The kids chatter away with each other, of course, and I love eavesdropping.  But they also talk with their dad and I.  We”ve had some lively discussions, second only to dinner table conversation, and I love it!

They are silly, brave, thoughtful, funny little kiddos and I love that these long walks let me see more of their individual personalities.

Plus, what can be more fun on a weekend morning than monkey bars and swings with four little monkeys of my own?

ParkDay8SUPER proud of herself! (rightfully so)

ParkDay6My job is to keep filling them up with snacks and to kiss boo-boos.

It”s a good gig.

So, about my giant FEED bag.  It comes from Target and it is part of the FEED USA collection designed by Lauren Bush Lauren.  The really cool thing about this collection is that your purchase helps gives meals to children and families across America.

Do you see that number 28?  That tells you that the purchase of this bag will help FEED USA Target provide 28 meals.  Founded by Lauren Bush Lauren in 2007, FEED”s mission is to create good products that help FEED the world.

From the tag:

“10% of original retail, excluding tax, of store sales from 6/30/13 to 10/12/13 will be donated to Feeding America.  $1 = 8 meals secured by Feeding America on behalf of local food banks.”

My bag is the large burlap bag (it also comes in and in ) and I think it”s very cute.  I have to tell you though, the burlap exterior, the cute navy blue polka dot liner, the large pockets (inside and out) and the fact that it is HUGE and therefore can carry all I need for my crew of six on a park day (and then some) and that my purchases from the FEED collection go toward a good cause?  Well, that sort of seals the deal for me, making the Target FEED bag my official bag of this Summer”s adventures!

And, here”s another cool development …

Thanks to our walks and talks, my work with the Target Inner Circle, and a wonderfully timed article in the local newspaper, the kids and I have been talking about ways that we can help in our local community.  We”ve discovered a local food bank and we”re talking about ways that we can help out and get involved as a family.

Stay tuned …

ParkDay3And how was your weekend?

Note: I”m a member of the Target Inner Circle.  All opinions are my own, of course, but you should know that I was given the bag you see in the photos and I got a chance to preview the FEED collection online before the release.

  1. That does look like a nice park. You’re really starting to sell me on your hometown. We drove through there yesterday and I think I spied that park. I will have to remember that park in place of the busier one in Fishers….

  2. This is fantastic. I’ve been doing the same thing with my daughter. I’ve noticed getting her outside during the day helps her sleep better at nap time and through the night. So, the park is the perfect place to get some fresh air and let her loose. Also, a great place for her to use her outdoor voice.

That Target bag looks great. I’ll have to look into it. Do you find the burlap rubs up against your arm and irritates it? That would be my concern, since my skin is sensitive to harsh textures against it.
Emily´s latest post: I cut my hair. No, literally, “I” cut my hair.

    • Emily, I don’t find that it does, but I do have a few friends who picked out the canvas bag because they didn’t like the scent of the burlap. It doesn’t bother this small town mama :-)

There’s some pretty cute lunch bags, too.

      Best wishes,
      Kara
