Turning our home into a Christmas tree forest #MyKindofHoliday

Orange Monkey ornament for kids #MyKindofHoliday

Note:  I’m a member of the Target Inner Circle and Target generously gave us a gift card to use to facilitate this post.

It all started last weekend when Max asked if we could set his Christmas tree up in his room so he could use it “like a night light.”  It had been a long, difficult week.  “It is a little early,” I thought, “but we could use some Christmas spirit around here, so why not?”

So, as is our tradition, we picked out this year’s special ornaments for the kids’ trees and set aside an evening last week to decorate.

Yes, you read that right, I said trees, plural.  We keep things simple at our house, but when it comes to Christmas trees we might be a little bit silly.  Okay, we might be a whole lot of silly!

When I was growing up one of my favorite aunts used to host Christmas for the family and she had a tree in every room of her house (Hi, Aunt Connie!). To me her home was like the North Pole, a really magical and happy place.  I guess putting up our trees reminds me of some of my favorite holidays growing up.

I keep things pretty simple when it comes to the rest of our holiday decor, but I don’t seem to be able to resist trees (each one bought at an after-Christmas sale) and pretty twinkling lights.

Sometimes you just have to act on a whim and throw out the rules, or at least bend them so they work for you, so we began turning our home into a Christmas tree forest.

First, at his request, we set up Max’s “night light” Christmas tree in his room.  His silver tree, set up in the middle of his Hot Wheels wall track (and I bet you can tell from the picture what his other two favorite things are right now, ha ha!) equals Max’s favorite kind of holiday.  This sweet boy elected to use his blanket, crocheted for him by his grandma when he was a baby, as the tree skirt (just like Linus, as a reader pointed out to me).

Next we decorated the girls’ tree for their shared bedroom.  We color code our kids, as you might remember, and it helps to keep things organized around here.

The kids are pretty into it, so the girls were thrilled when we found these sparkly gem ornaments at Target in each of their colors:  pink, purple, and aqua.  (We found monkey ornaments in each of the kids’ colors, too including orange for Max.  It was kind of awesome, though the monkeys haven’t spent much time actually on the trees, ha ha!)

A pink tree with sparkly jewel ornaments and a purple sequin tree skirt?  That is my daughters’ kind of holiday.

And then, because at this point, why not decorate another tree, on Wednesday night before Thanksgiving we decided to decorate a tree for our living room and then have a little rockin’ around the Christmas tree dance party to celebrate.

If you follow me on Instagram, you might have already seen these snapshots:

And, you know what friends?  I don’t think we’re done yet.  This weekend we’re going to put up another tree in our library/home office.

A pretty, personalized tree in every room?  I guess that is my kind of holiday.

#MyKindofHoliday is Target’s campaign. You can follow along on with the hashtag on social media to see what makes the holidays special for folks and what events, traditions, food, and decorations make up their kind of holiday fun and joy.

  1. I love it, Kara! Max has a kind heart like my boy – I smiled at his using a special blanket “like Linus”. Our favourite Christmas special and holiday season sound track. I think we just might need a playroom Christmas tree! Such a fun idea!
