Greetings from Indiana, USA! The kids and I are so happy to be the current stop on
If you”ve never been to the Simple Kids blog before, welcome! If you”re a regular reader, then you might recognize long-time Simple Kids contributor Mariah Bruehl and her .
To introduce ourselves, my name is Kara and my kids are Amelia, Lucy, Max, and Jillian. We live in Fortville, a small town in central Indiana (close to Indianapolis) in the United States.
We love our town because it has lots of green space, including two parks, a wonderful community arts center, and a terrific library. We love our local ice cream parlor and on Wednesday evenings in the Summertime there is a classic car “cruise in” right on Main Street.
It is a lovely town to walk in, with plenty of sidewalks connecting neighborhoods, local businesses, and the parks, and the people here are very friendly. And, should we crave big city life, Indianapolis with its museums, zoo, and restaurants is just a short drive away.
Mostly, though, we”re content to stay here in Fortville, enjoying the comforts of home in a place where life moves at a slower pace.
We”re enjoying the last month of Summer here right now and the weather is warm, sunny, and pleasant, with the occasional thunderstorm or overcast day.
The cicadas are starting up their annual party, making quite a bit of noise. Our gardens are producing lots of tomatoes, zucchini, and peppers. It is currently State Fair time in Indiana and this year at the fair it is the year of popcorn.
The kids LOVE playing! Here are some of their current favorite ways to play:
- Amelia (age 2) – enjoys playing with wooden blocks, baby dolls, and outside in the sandbox.
- Lucy (age 5) – likes going to the park, drawing with markers, and playing with baby dolls.
- Max (age 7) – likes to jump rope, play Angry Birds, play card games like UNO, Crazy 8s, and Go Fish.
- Jillian (age 11) – enjoys riding her bike, creating miniatures for her dollhouse, and collecting trading cards.
- All of the kids like playing in our box fort, playing in the backyard with the dog, and doing puzzles.
Playful Learning: Backyard Science Investigations
When Mariah contacted us about trying out one of the Playful Learning ecademy courses, I knew that the Backyard Science Investigations had our nature-study loving names written all over it!
We”re just started with the ecourse, but we”re already really enjoying ourselves, learning quite a bit about our backyard, and focusing on slowing down, observing, and seeing the would around us from a new perspective.
I think this is going to blend well into our family”s weekly routine and it is fun to get to observe our backyard through the eyes of all of my kids (this course can easily adapt to all ages).
There”s a lot going on in our small square, once you know where to look. I think Backyard Science Investigations is going to give us some tools and help us develop some good habits for just those types of discoveries.
We”re also currently taking the Playful Learning Spaces ecourse and the Put Ups ecourse. If you”re interested in these classes, or any of the line up of wonderful Playful Learning courses, visit Marah”s website to learn more.
The Power of Put-Ups ecourse for FREE
Playful Learning is a wonderful ecademy, and because Mariah feels so strongly about her Put Ups course and its availability to children and families, she is offering it for FREE. Simply enter the coupon code WORLDPEACE at checkout. Isn”t that wonderful?
As Mariah says in the introduction video of the Backyard Science course, “you don”t need to be an expert” to teach your children with these courses. You can learn right along with your child.
I think for me personally, that is one of the neatest things about the ecademy, it can truly be a family affair.
We hope you enjoyed learning about life in a small town in Indiana, USA.
