The following is by music columnist Jennifer Brown.
So there was once a time when I prided myself on knowing all of the words to Ice, Ice Baby by Vanilla Ice–don’t judge me too harshly I was 12, it was popular and I had a lot of time on my hands.
Today, I know just about every word to Recess Money’s latest release The Final Funktier. I guess it’s still a matter of popularity, as ever since we popped this CD into our car I often get a request for “the space album.”
I’d never heard of Recess Monkey until this album arrived in my mailbox, but now that I’m a fan in my own right, I can see why this Seattle based group has had such success.
The Final Funktier is their sixth album release; and this band, comprised of three elementary school teachers, has truly managed to capture the essence of this stage of life.
Their lyrics in songs like Science Fair, Sunglasses and Booster Seat are cleaver, memorable and relevant to the life of any kid whose moved into a booster seat, likes wearing sunglasses or participated in a science fair (or is just three and fascinated with the idea of a baking soda and vinegar volcano). This is an album which will propel you – literally – with your Moon Boots and Jet Pack into the elementary school world.
The creativity and originality of this band’s lyrics is reminiscent of one of my other favorites They Might Be Giants. Their performance style, while at times somewhat similar, is more akin to early tunes from The Beatles and even Buddy Holly.
Veterans of the Children’s Music Scene
Recess Monkey, although new to me, is not new to the children’s music scene. They’ve been reviewed by an number of top media outlets including: USA Today, NPR’s Morning Edition, KIWI magazine and SIRIUS/XM’s Kid’s Place Live.
My complaint? The album has a run-time of 34 minutes, which means if you’ve got a morning of errands in the car you’ll listen to the whole album rather quickly—again and again. Then you, too, can have the honor of knowing all of the lyrics to One Tiny Light (a personal favorite).
