Let’s Talk: Spring Cold and Flu Season, How Do You Keep Your Family Healthy?

Just a quick post today, as three quarters of my household is down and out with a Spring cold.  Is it just me, or does it seem like many folks are suffering during this Spring cold season?

This year, the households of my friends and family seem to be getting hit with Spring’s colds almost as often as the rainclouds pass by.  In the interest of keeping our families healthy, I thought I would share a few of my favorite resources for cold and flu season and then open up the comments and invite you to share, too.

At our house, it seems like we pretty much follow the rest, chicken soup, and vitamin C approach to treating a Spring cold.  We bring out the “Rainy Day Box” and occupy ourselves with things like puzzle books, Mad Libs, and Brain Quest cards in between naps, while we rest on the sofa.

I stress the importance of hand washing and do a bit of extra cleaning,  hoping to disinfect our household of germs so that we can get better faster.

Usually, waiting it out is the name of the game, but as a mother I like to feel like I’m taking a proactive stance against illness, too.

  2. Kara, I’m so glad you brought this topic up.
    I think one of the most important things to remember in keeping you and your family from getting sick is to not let your defenses down b/c it’s spring!

    What do I mean? When it warms up and the sun is out we all have the urge to run out in t-shirts and celebrate. However, just because it’s warmer than January, doesn’t mean it isn’t cold enough to stress our bodies out and make us vulnerable.

    We are constantly being vigilant with our children to dress appropriately – wear windblockers. Wear a sweater. Remember 65 degrees in the sun is not 80 degrees and it still chills your body down. University of Cardiff in Wales, Japanese researchers in Antarctic and others have done great research showing the connection between exposure to cold and catching cold or flus. Lots of theories as to why but essentially, when you stress your body so it has to use energy to keep you warm, you lower resources to your immune system.

    Other advice? Take vitamin C REGULARLY. It passes thru your body fast. So take high doses (1-2 g) and regularly. You won’t get intestinal disturbance if your body needs it. Like Catherine above rec’s hot tea with lemon juice and honey gives your mucus membranes an extra dose of C and acidity which helps too!

  3. I swear we’ve had a harder time this spring than in the winter too. Glad to know we aren’t the only ones! As for tips, my favorite preventative method is frequent hand-washing – I’m a believer! Once they’re sick, we’re heavy on baths, snuggles, and OJ smoothies! Thanks for adding more ideas to the arsenal!

  5. Funny, my daughter and I both just recently picked up a cold! I was so shocked since it’s almost summer. We’ve been drinking lots of water, taking warm honey with lemon juice, drinking tea with a little apple cider vinegar, lemon juice and honey in it and getting lots of rest. So far it’s been helping!

  6. We stay home when we’re sick, mostly out of respect for other people, but also so the kids’ can get over what they have before they pick up something else. The last thing I want is to spread our germs around to people with compromised immune systems. Sometimes it’s hard to stay home when the kids are starting to feel better, but I use the rule of keeping them home for about a week from the onset of symptoms – especially for things like stomach bugs and fevers/bad colds. We also wash hands and try to eat healthy/drink lots of water/get lots of rest. As far as trying to stay healthy, the rest/eating/drinking/hand washing stuff works for that, too, I guess. I struggle with germ phobia, so my challenge has been making sure the kids get social time with other people without worrying all the time about them getting sick. My temptation, especially during the winter months, is to isolate them. They do stay physically healthier when we don’t got out much, but I know their social and emotional health would suffer if I kept them home all the time! Also, I have to make sure that hand washing doesn’t become compulsive or too frequent – me urging everyone to wash their hands all the time can get annoying and ridiculous, and then there’s the problem of dry skin. Finally, what do you think about hand sanitizers/disinfectant wipes? I tend to shy away from them because I don’t want my kids ingesting poison and I don’t want to contribute to the development of superbugs. On the other hand, it is tempting to use them when we’re out and about to try to keep germs at bay.

  7. DD and I both have asthma, so avoiding colds and flu is crucial. We pray constantly for our health and against germs, load up on anti-inflammatory foods (anything rich in antioxidants ACE or omega-3s, plus lots of yogurt and raw honey), limit our dairy and sugar, and avoid processed food like the plague. We also take an antioxidant-rich whole-food supplement. In the year and a half since we’ve been doing this, we’ve both seen a drastic improvement in our overall immunity to illness as well as with our allergies and asthma.

  8. We use something called Silver Sol that we get from a local homeopath or I’ve seen it for sale online. It is anti-viral and anti-bacterial but doesn’t kill the probiotics in our gut. We all take it internally when we feel like we are getting sick and right now I’m using it as eye drops for my daughter who has pink eye. It can be used for just about anything and is very safe. I highly recommend. If you Google Silver Sol you can find out about different ways it can be used.
    When we are sick we also avoid sugar and try to get lots of rest. Other great things we use and get at the local health food store are grapefruit seed extract, garlic supplements, Wish Garden Kick Ass Immune or oregano oil.
