This is ironic, because on Saturday I declared a "NO SCREEN TIME" week for my own sanity. We've been sick, and spent too much time the last two weeks watching TV and letting my boy play on the computer, and he's addicted.

So we've been screen-free (for him, we watched the House premier last night and need laptops for work) intentionally for the last few days and already there's been a difference.

Oh my, what a challenge! Especially on premiere week!

I shut off the TV for one week earlier this year, and felt so good about how much I was able to get done in the meantime (chores/projects)! It does feel so good to be TV free (but the want for veg-out time always comes back)!

I must say that we're really good at limiting TV. I keep the TV off all day and my daughter only watches Sesame Street from 7-8 pm at night. That's when I'm spent and need a break. Plus, it's a great way for her to wind down at the end of the day before bathtime. I'm with Rachel...turning off the computer screen would be a much more challenging task for us!

I have to say in all honesty that your daughters are watching less than mine! Our biggest challenge is mornings. We are all quite accustomed to having TV on to help us wake up and get started!

Yes to board games! And lots of good stories, too.

There is an interesting story on that photo. The photographer wrote in his notes that their family actually doesn't watch TV, and it was a struggle to get his child to sit like that in front of the TV long enough for him to get the shot.

You and me both, Rachel! If it were JUST TV Turnoff Week, I could survive happily. But turn my computer screen off? For a week? Well, actually I did just do that earlier this month - completely non-voluntarily - and I survived that, too. But I sure did miss it!

Good idea on the no TV after 10 rule!

I know! It's almost as if those who planned it for this week were sort of out-of-the-loop on TV premiere week. For the record, however, I think DVRing premieres to watch later is perfectly fine. Or, alternatively, planning your own Turnoff Week when re-runs are scheduled might also work. :)

I have done a great job curbing my TV watching over the summer but it is harder for me to resist some of my favourite shows that are starting up.

My daughters only watch an hour a day (I think that is relatively "good") but they sure come to rely on that TV time. It is part of their "down" time.

I wonder how we would do with this challenge. Something to think about.

Thanks,
Tricia

Whoa, that first photo is positively eerie!

Thanks for highlighting this. It's a challenge our family will happily accommodate. For us this means no movie, either. My kids don't play video game either, but if/when they do it will also mean no video games!

We'll be dusting off the board games.
